Can you see the dust?.  That dust should not be there, the fan sucks in cool air from outside the laptop and if you look closely at the picture you can see the silver grills at the top of the picture. The cool air cools down these grills and the grills are connected to a copper heatsink as shown to the left. This heatsink sits on top of the processor. In the bottom left of the image is the heatsink that covers the processor. So the heat from the processor needs to be channeled to the fan area. This dust does not accumulate over a few months, unless you work in a woodyard like some of our customers. This dust acumulates after a year or two. Can you see the hairs in the dust ?. They are like sticky glue straws holding the dust together. Having pets in the house can increase the chances of your laptop over heating. The dell laptop will over heat and cut out or switch off because under the processor is a micro heat sensor. For safety reasons it will switch the laptop off.  When a Dell laptop overheats it may cut out while transferring files. This in turn will cause software problems. The operating system will need to be relaoded. This is not always the case as with windows 7 as it boots up it can try to restore the missing or corrupt files.
